Gear review Friday: leathermantools Raptor Shears I’ve carried these raptor shears for about 5-ish years at work. At first it was just to have another cool piece of gear accompany my still fresh EMT certification. They seemed high speed and I thought I was too. The week after attending a handgun tactics course with bullcreek_strategic I just started my shift and began my normal area checks. My shift began at 1500. At 15:11 I was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident with injury. I arrived to find that a cord fiesta had struck the corner of a box truck on a curve and removed the top of the fiesta. I approached the vehicle to find the occupant unconscious and what I thought to be, 10-7. Upon checking for a pulse I noticed a faint threads pulse beneath my fingers and simultaneously he woke up. Using these very shears I removed his shirt to find a sever lower jugular laceration. I was by myself, talking on the radio and stumbling my way through this for the next 7 minutes solo. 4 combat gauzes, a TQ, a pair of mechanix gloves and about 5 Z-folded gauzes later he was on a helicopter on his way to a trauma center. The next time I used these shears was to remove a barricaded despondent subject from a vehicle via the window punch. He was on a meth high and threatening self harm. We were able to quickly and safely extract him. He’s now in recovery to this day. It took 2 incidents for me to believe these are essential in anything I’m doing going forward.
