Tool Tales

May 2009

A Real Survival Sidekick

I received an original PST as a gift in 1986. I'm kind of a handy-man mechanical type, and used it practically every day.

In 2006, my son-in-law Bob and I were out on a 28 foot utility boat in the Chesapeake Bay. The engine stalled, but he said he knew what was wrong, and had the new part aboard, but forgot to replace it. Not only that, but he did not bring the tool box. I handed him my Leatherman and told him to get to work. We replaced the throttle position sensor in about 20 minutes, and were on our way. He said he wondered why I had carried that tool for 20 years, and now knew.

When my daughter was looking for ideas for a gift for him, I told her to go out and get the Leatherman with the most tools. She got a WAVE, and he has carried it ever since. He uses it every day, working on boats. When he first showed it to me, I was impressed, and retired my old PST and got a WAVE. I really got a lot of use out of it, until after owning it about 6 months, somehow broke the sheath and lost it in Atlantic City. Out came the old PST, and I'm still using it. I just need a new sheath. After 23 years, I kind of wore it out.

Tell Us Your Tale

OK, you voyeur, you. Enough of reading other people's stories. It's time you told your own tale of gripping heroism or even just neat DIY'ism. We know there's a Shakespeare in you somewhere. Don't make us use the Steens to find it.
