First Wave, Next Surge
I got my Leatherman Wave about 4 years ago and it immediately became an everyday part of my life. I am a computer technician and also a licensed electrician and often do electrical and carpentry work. At the time I got the Wave I did some online research and found the Wave to have the most practical tools of all comparable brands and models. I never use cork screws or leather punches or anything like that and wanted more useful tools instead. Practically every tool on the Wave seemed practical to my needs, so that is the one I decided to get. I also purchased the pocket clip and prefer to carry it that way instead of in the sheath. I must say I have used every tool on the Wave repeatedly. It even does more than I expected. For example, the diamond file makes an excellent knife sharpener, and the wire cutters will cut 12-2 (with ground) cable in a single cut, and rather easily, too.
Recently one of the jaws of the pliers broke off and I had to ship it in for Warranty service. I must say their procedures are simple and effective; no RMA or prior contact necessary; just fill out their downloadable form and ship it to them. To my surprise, Leatherman did not repair my Wave, but instead sent me a brand-new one. They even pay for the return shipping. WOW! That is awesome customer service. I seriously doubt I will ever buy another brand of multi-tool again. It only took about a week from the day I shipped it (overnight) to them until I got the replacement and I could not believe how many times I needed to use it during that time. It sure gave me a new appreciation for the tool. I have decided that a backup would be good to have in the unlikely event that I may be without it again, plus it just seems like a good excuse to get another one, so I am getting the Surge. It basically has the same tools as the Wave, but bigger.
